Donor-conceived people
The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) was established in 1991 and has, since its creation, recorded details of all conceptions involving donor eggs or sperm through licensed fertility clinics in the UK.
If you are a donor-conceived person conceived after 1 August 1991 at a UK licensed clinic, your birth details are recorded on the HFEA Register of Information, together with information about your parents, your donor and any other children conceived with the same donor.The law gives you certain rights to access that information.
If you were conceived before 1 August 1991, or other than through a licensed clinic in the UK, there is no central public record in the UK of the details of your conception. If you want to find out more about your genetic heritage, UK DonorLink might be able to help.
Donor conceived people: your rights to access the HFEA Register of Information
If your details are recorded on the HFEA Register of Information, you have rights to access information about:
- Whether you are donor-conceived
- Whether you are related to a proposed partner
- Your donor
- Donor-conceived genetic siblings.
